First branch in bloom
Spring came late in new York so Maya noticed the first flowers only yesterday. We went in the garden today and tied our martisor strings to a forsythia branch in bloom.

Writing celebration
Today, the last school day before Easter vacation we went for the writing celebration at her class. It meant a pot luck breakfast - that almost overtook the event today, and the kids showing us their writings. Some of their essays were put together in a magazine format - page 1 and 6 of each are here.(click images for larger size) In addition, I got to read Maya's information book on her chosen subject "Wolves". It's opinionated and well written! ("How is a wolf eating a pig any worse than a cat eating a mouse?" she argues in her passionate defense of the maligned bad guy, the wolf)

Spring is here, bird feeder
Today we had 77 degrees! Maya got a bird feeder for her birthday which she painted with her friend Clark. Today we bought sunflower seed for small birds and hang the bright little house in the garden. Also, a lot of gogosari planted on Maya's birthday are sprouting! So are wild strawberries planted on the first day of spring.

Last show/closing party
Last show today...Victor and I bought tickets and watched it again - although my stomach was churning with worries about her costume change...She got help and did fine! A party followed - with a pot luck (I brought chirke papricas).
The stage was being dismantled under our own eyes and Maya started to cry ("I don't want the stage to go! The stage is my friend!") I consoled her that her friend is kept safe for next year. We ate good stuff, Maya run around and asked my moral support to go hug Crystal, the director.
Some pics with the last bow, all the kids from the show

Recorder concert
Today, after one semester of learning and practicing, 5 of the most dedicated recorder students had a concert. These kids skipped recess to have recorder class and all love their music - like their enthusiastic teacher Mr Coby.
As further proof of their dedication, 2 of the 5 kids that showed up today were sick (one of them, Maya)

Maya celebrations
Blast from the past -
Some distortions and some true stories - and a startling photo - thanks to the googling talents of Dodo & Tania
St Patrick? Air Kracken!
Today St Patrick's day is celebrated here. Lousy story (Christians slaughtering pagans in Ireland - calling them snakes in the beatified version) but they do put on a good parade.
I like much better this newly discovered "holiday"
because all them cool monsters - and there's literature too!

Maya Birthday - Day 3- the school cookies
Review of Maya's play
We found this on line. Snipets:
"The finale of the show is an anthem about the devastation of New Orleans sung by the full forces of the cast (35 actors!) that repeats the phrase "Nothing will stop us...we will build again!" Pretty potent stuff for a children's musical."
"A firefly ballet by director/choreographer Crystal Field is truly lovely." (Maya's in it)
"The big cast appears mostly to be made up of non-professional performers, but in no way are the performances lacking in commitment and effectiveness. The huge range of ages, ethnic backgrounds, accents, and styles give ...Windblown Visitors a warm feeling of community, and watching the entire group passionately deliver the final anthem gave the impression of an entire city neighborhood joining forces for a common cause."

Behind the Stage, birthday celebration with the troupe
I've been playing personal assistant to Maya - for at least a moment in the show where she has a quick costume change and needs help.
So, I took a few photos during the show today. After the show, the troupe had a pot luck on the stage, and we brought cookies for Maya and everyone sang Happy Birthday
