Keeping an eye on Ava
Last night, about ! AM, my Paris webcam offered me THIS amazing photo.
And just for the record, it's not always pretty. One night it had a dark cloud hovering over it - like smoke from a fire...
I saved here more interesting shots - some in 24h period

Happy Birthday, Victor!
This is the Sacher Torte as it came out of the oven (glaze & icing to follow). Victor's cake is...eggplants & tomatoes.
Later on, when Maya will return from her rehearsals, we'll do the eggplant candle blowing and the planting of the Gogosar seeds (obtained with great sacrifices from Romania) Tomorrow, we'll go at the grandparents' house were we'll have ...the regular people's cake.
More photos to follow.
Another thing: Maya's evaluation came today and some of the things her teacher wrote about her - I just HAVE to brag:
"Maya is an exuberant presence in the classroom. She tries to get along with, and include everybody. It's amazing to watch her approach a child who is as different from her as could possibly be, and ask that child to join in on the game she is playing"
"Maya became so invested in our latest read aloud book, Julie of the Wolves, that she actually wrote an eulogy and held a mock funeral for a flawed character that was killed. This thoughtful act speaks for the sense of empathy that Maya brings to both her reading and her interactions with her classmates."
back to Victor's day celebration.
We planted gogosari (more on Maya's birthday_, we had the eggplant "birthday cake - Maya played "Happy Birthday" on the recorder.

Call from Cati! Sledding!
Cati called today...She won't even get to read this any time soon - the computer is on the fritz... But she sounded great and we had a good talk.
In the afternoon, in spite of bitter cold, Maya convinced me to take her sledding. My hands were sticking to the camera it was so cold! And her face got all pink! Now we are drinking hot chocolate (cacao cu frisca)

Maya's play in school
Maya's class put on a play about a Native American legend. Corn dolls were given life to watch over children, but got to vain and forgot their duties so they were deprived of their abilities to move and speak and their faces.
Tonight - we have movie night at school. That means, buying lots of food cooked by some parents, running around through the auditorium and screaming while something (Pee Wee's Big Adventure) is projected on the screen. We love it!

Correction
The blog didn't allow me to edit the last post for some reason so I am clarifying: Jeff is the teacher who is interviewed in that news piece (not the kid that appears in the still)
Also, as this is an editorial post, I hope you discovered that most become HUGE if you click them!

Happy Groundhog Day!
Punxutawney Phil and Staten Island Chuck didn't see their shadow - so they predicted an early spring. However, East Village Woody - that's another story. So, in East Village, 6 more weeks if winter. Sorry Phil!
And first props for East Village Woody (indirectly)come from The Gothamist:
Del | new-york |
From the page: "Let us start by saying Gothamist loves Staten Island Chuck. But our unconditional love for New York's largest commuting rodent hasn't fogged our assessment of Chuck's forecasting ability. We realize this is the first time Chuck #6 has made a forecast, but it is as wrong as the last couple of forecasts the late Chuck #5 made. It pains us to contradict Chuck. There will be no early spring this year."
Later in the day we started the Imbolc/burning of the Christmas trees party in the garden. In spite of rain coming down , enough hard core party devotees showed up - and a beautiful sight it was!
